She should be unscathed in S. Florida-this one is hitting more north. I love storms!

I only like hurricanes from the air.

when we flew above hurricane Erin in '95 that was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen with my own eyes. we could see the entire thing incliuding the perfectly formed eye

from the ground they suck MAJOR donkey balls. contray to popular befief it's not an exciting thing to see yer neighbors cars and all kinds of other stuff floating down the street especially when yer 8

hey guys :)
hope isabel isn't affecting anyone too badly.
all's well down here, we were pretty concerned last week when the storm was headed toward us.
but then..she turned north and we breathed a sigh of relief, esp when the strength lessened.
hopefully it won't be any worse for anyone than maybe some power outtages...
I know there are some areas already flooded before the storm so let's hope they get thru alright...)

We were just about in the middle of Hurricane Andrew in 92 (with a 2 yr old and 6 month old) and our roof pretty much blew off in the middle of the night.
And it was pitch black so you couldn't see what was happening...just hearing the horrendous wailing and howling wind and the shingles ripping off our roof and the water pouring in through the a/c vents and the light fixtures was
very very frightening :(
We were out of our house for about 3 months - actually we were the first ones back in our community due to a good contractor.
The aftermath of the storm was a nightmare...dealing with insurance and minimal supplies and the intense S. Fla August heat ...
and the tires constantly flattening on the cars because of all the nails in the streets and the humungous piles of trash (rotten food, mattresses, moldy carpet from hundreds and hundreds of homes)
and the National Guard on every corner (no traffic signals) .....

imagine paint being blown off houses
and shingles and other debris imbedded in tree trunks
and "Looters will be shot" and "Please send Help" spray painted on homes and businesses...
and losing every possession whether replaceable (electronics) to irreplaceable (photographs)...
and seeing your neighborhood on the news from overhead with all the roofs missing
and homes and apartments with complete walls missing so you can see right 'inside'
and the pink insulation from attics just everywhere...
and all your clothes and linens and everything just wet and growing moldier by the second...
and your friends having to nail barricades against doors so they would be safe in the closet or bathroom under a mattress til the storm was over....

and huge trees toppled over with the roots 15 feet above your head..
and every palm tree that remained standing either broken in half or without a frond....
and every plant broken or just gone.. :(

and hearing my parents (we were staying with them after the storm for awhile) neighbor raking raking raaaaaaaaking the leaves on his sidewalk....out of either boredom or anxiety....for what seemed like hours...
arghhhhhhhhhh...!@!!

and intense anxiety to this day when a windy storm approaches...

Andrew was a Category 4-5 compared to Isabel which is a high 2 at this point maybe up to a low 3....a huge difference in intensity but Isabel can be quite dangerous and devastating none the less.

by the way it was the weekend of our high school reunion so everyone (huge class) that had flown into town for the event was stuck there for the storm...

wva gets weather from hurricanes but NOTHING like what coastal areas get - we'll probably just get some rain -

i hope everyone in those more coastal regions are going to be okay -

thats totally terrible, serena and i hope i never have tolive thru that.

right now, its really windy and very rainy here...the kids all have their fingers http://bbs.pearl-jam.net/images/smilies/cross-eyed.gif crossed that there is no school tomorrow :P

however, the local news guys say to expect power outages...because the ground is soooo saturated from all the rain we've been getting that, when these high winds +50 hit, trees will start coming down. so, im a little worried about that, but i think we have everything we need if the power goes out.

The Governor of PA has declared a State of Emergency here tonight, it went into effect this evening. It's very windy out, but not quite scary windy .....yet. The gusts have been picking up progressively though. We have 6 massive 60 year old oak's on our property, they have the hub and I little bit nervous.
Hi Smirks! Hey everyone!

I took advantage on living on the shore, and I went down to the beach last night after work.

The ocean was INCREDIBLE. I've never seen anything as awesome as I did last night.

I had my camera with me but I don't know how well the pictures came out because it was getting close to dark, but I'll post 'em if they come out alright.

The winds were sustained at what felt like to be 50 mph, but gusted to about 70 a few times, and it knocked the breath right outta me. I've still got sand in my hair, and eyes. I can't even image just 30 more mph could have felt like.

I'm going back out there tomorrow to take some "after" pictures too.

Witnessing these events makes you appreciate the power that mother nature can hand you.

I was just ticked that we didn't lose power, that would have been the ultimate for me..darnit!

If I could have pulled it off and afforded it, I would have drove down to NC just for this storm. I wish I was a brainic is science......I'd be a storm chaser at the snap of fingers. I LIVE for this stuff.

My crazy friend Becca is with the Texas Tech Wind Sciences team at the moment chasing the damn thing. Silly girl! So, yeah, i hope she's ok and everything... although this isn't the first time she gone off to chase storms, but I think this is the first hurricane.
