How about Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Not literature, but "Song of Myself" is amazing to read.

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand (the relationship and relevence of the individual to society - not the sort of thing you would normally see recommended here)
Atlas Sgrugged by Ayn Rand (the relationship and relevance of Capitalism to society - definateky not the sirt of thing that would normally be recommended here)
Any of the Matt Scudder Mysteroes by Lawrence Block (Block writes detective stories very well, but it's more about the character of Matt Scudder)
Leviathan by Paul Auster (One of the best American Novelists about. An easy read and not as preachy as Don Delilo)
Beyond Good and Evil by Frederich Neitsche (The concept of the Superman)
The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins (Dawkins picks up where Dawin left off)
London by Edward Rutherford (the history of this great city told as a Novel)
Anything by Carl Hiaasen (good for a laugh)
Glamorama by Bret Easton Elis (The best satirical writer of the 20th century, this book ripps apart the american obsession with beauty)
That should keep you going.

Read Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt if you haven't already. It's a great one.

I just finished that in my English class, good book. We had to do a project, a colage (did I spell that right?) using phrases to describe the book/Holden. I put my PJ cds on repeat and started jotting stuff down. When I presented in class there was this kid who seriously NEVER talks and he was like "hey isn't that Pearl Jam?" hahaha!

Charles de Lint: The Newford Collection
(Trilogy feat. short stories and novellas.)
1. Dreams Underfoot (1993)
2. The Ivory and the Horn (1995)
3. Moonlight and Vine (1999)
If I had to rate them, they'd rank as follows:
1. The Ivory and The Horn
2. Dreams Underfoot
3. Moonlight and Vine
I read them in the wrong order, so it doesn't matter which one you read first, really. I read them 2, 1, 3.
All the books combine celtic and Aboriginal mythology, and basic fantasy that has no 'label'. The characters are those on the outskirts of society, in general, including starving artists/musicians, the homeless, and then there are your 'regular types' who either deal with the type of aforementioned characters or just have somethings to deal with.. Almost all of the characters relate to each other in one way or another. It's mysticism mixed with reality, but it's not farfetched. It's hard to explain it.
I guess.. just find one of the books (I highly recommend The Ivory and The Horn) and read the jacket... /images/tongue.gif
read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
it's an amazing book
