Townshend Cleared of Child Pornography Possession
The Who rocker Pete Townshend released on his Web site Wednesday that he has avoided charges of possessing child pornography, but he won't go without any scars.
The British guitarist, who was arrested in January on suspicion of downloading child pornography from the internet, will be left with a record -- he'll be added to the national register of sex offenders.
The 57-year old, who had fiercely protested his innocence claiming he was researching for his autobiography, has admitted that he used a credit card to access the site on the Web.
On his website he writes, "From the very beginning, I acknowledged that I did access this site and that I had given the police full access to all of my computers".
He adds, "As I made clear at the outset, I accessed the site because of my concerns at the shocking material readily available on the Internet to children as well as adults, and as part of my research toward the campaign I had been putting together since 1995 to counter damage done by all kinds of pornography on the internet, but especially any involving child abuse."
Townshend says the police have "unconditionally accepted" his motives for accessing the site and the lack of any "nefarious purpose." He also states on his site that he accepts their caution.
