I guess thinking I had a favorite Beatle (John) was sort of... silly. Until now, and I've been into the Beatles for probably six years (I know, I'm young... Missed the first like five boats), I thought John was my favorite. Now, personality-wise and conscience-wise, I think John is still my favorite. He just had such a vision beyond his music and he was gifted at other arts besides music... But I'm not going to try and list all his qualities right now.
The point is that... musically, I assumed John was my favorite as well, but I think I was listening very shallowly to the music. Til like six months ago I didn't even really know/distinguish the differences between John, Paul, and George's voices. I feel sort of guilty about it. But it's okay, because I finally woke up. I guess I was too wrapped up in Pearl Jam to think I could find any REMOTELY equivalent beauty in anything else, so I didn't really try.
But now I realize the depth of the Beatles experience. (Fear not, PJ will *always* be my unsurpassably favorite band). And I think, musically, I am more into Paul's songs. I'm thinking of the songs that make me cry-- I've Just Seen a Face, Mother Nature's Son (i swear this song is sooo underrated. it's becoming one of my favorites), Golden Slumbers, The Long and Winding Road, Let it Be, Hey Jude, uhh stuff.
Umm okay I've just caught myself doing what I said I was stupid for doing in the first place-- ranking my Beatles. Because then i was like "but some of john's songs are moving too... Julia, A Day in the Life..." However to me, John's songs seem more... like complex and... a bit harder edged. It could be because his voice has more of an edge than Paul's, but I think it has alot to do with the music. I can't deny the brilliance of Across the Universe, I Am the Walrus, even Helter Skelter..., and the momma of Stupidmop- Revolution 9.
So I'm talking in circles, because really the point is moving towards saying that fuck... Paul and John are both my favorite Beatles, as such.
George... it might be argued that George goes up there too. He didn't get alot of writing space, but fuck... "something" is easily one of the top three most beautiful songs on Abbey Road. And the white album... "Long, Long, Long," "Savoy Truffle," "WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS!" Here comes the young one... Ha fuck that was such an inadvertant reference to Here Comes the Sun. Maybe it was subconscious.
Okay this is the point where my rambling affects even me, and i admit that i've just been fucking aroudn for like 15 min and now i don't feel like writing anymore of this post. So i'll post as is and if i feel like it tomorrow or so, maybe add the sentiments i omitted.
I'd just like tos ay that the lack of Ringo is cuz really... well as much as I want to treat all beatles equally, Ringo just doesnt' do it for me. At best, he's sort of goofy. To me. But I'm not saying drums ain't important. I'm not a drummer so I think I take em for granted, anyway. But i'm not saying the beatles don't need a drummer, i'm just saying i harbor no real attachment to Ringo.
Okay.
Later,
Nicole
P.S. I couldn't get into CJWM tonight, so i'm currently in some weird chat room where there is supposedly one other person, but they ain't saying anything, so i'm talking to msyefl in there. It's surprisingly (or is it??) amusing.
I want to show you something cool i made up yesterday, tho, for my email signature line... this is what it looks like, mmmk? Aww fuckin a, i have no way of knowing if yr window (or mine for that matter) will show this how it's supposed to be. So if this looks like shit, well i'll post a reply telling you this ain't what it really is.
