maria and saul, two american lovers
one loved the women, the other loved strangers
saul worked downtown in the old vaudeville show
playing magic with cards so maria couldn't know
the kind of life that her parents tried so hard to escape
avoiding the mountaintops and alleys full of rape
saul loved maria, and maria loves saul
sometimes that's enough when there's nothing else at all.
saul and maria, they've got a stable to feed now
been together so long they'd recognize one another
in the dark where the pillows lay. saul hardly sleeps
merely shuffling the time away; peaceful, maria keeps
pushing away in the thoughts, subconcious
and as saul's arm tightens up, she remains unresponsive
so in his last moment, saul is left wondering
if his maria will let him lie there, it's a troubling
thought to have to bear in the final moments of young life
cursing yourself for betraying your lovely wife
saul loved maria, and maria still loves saul
sometimes that's enough when there's nothing left at all.
