Well, the beautiful Layne Staley has left our lives. Or has he?
He's been 'gone' for quite sometime. We've heard things of him from time to time, that he was doing well, and enjoying not being in the limelight. We heard that he was enjoying writing poetry and drawing and painting. When we heard this, we felt better, we felt happy, "Layne is finally at peace."
Most of us truly didn't know what was happening with Layne and his life. But even though he had yet to be heard from in a few years, we still felt as though he was around. Constant talk of the band Mad Season, along with the powerful lyrics on all Alice In Chains albums have always been on the topics of convervsation. You didn't have to wonder if you were the only guy who ever listened to Alice In Chains anymore, because you could see that they were still very much alive in the rotation. Every day you are guarenteed to hear at least one AIC songs on a radio that plays decent music, they're music is a staple to a radio station.
If it wasn't 'Rooster' in was 'Man in the Box.' If it wasn't 'Say Goodbye, Don't Follow' it was 'It's Over Now.' And you always got a smile on your face. You smiled because you were hearing some true genuine music. With one of the most special and raw voices of rock. Layne's voice was haunting and grasped not only the pain that were in the lyrics, but also the healing that was taking place each time a word was sung.
The most special artists are the ones who vent through their music, because it's the only way they know how.
Layne had problems. We all knew it, but each time you talked about him you wanted to just hope that it had all ended for him. We've watched and heard about other artists who were/are/had gone through the same problems with drugs. It is tough to deal with because you have no idea what you can do. By listening to their music, you feel that you have done something to just show that they are special to you.
Layne has been gone for quite awhile, yet now there is no longer going to be questions about what he is doing, or if there will ever be a reunion of AIC, and that sucks. But you know, I'm still going to feel much like what I have been. While listening to AIC or Mad Season, and I will wonder how Layne is doing
and I can now answer myself for sure, and say "He's doing a lot better."
We'll miss him, we will never forget him, and we'll be thankful that those cds sitting in the player will always be around. ~JB
