I'm writing a reseach paper for my English 152 class. The subject is cd copyright protection/burning cds/effect on the industry. If you burn cds would you mind answering a few questions?
Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it?
Or do you download and burn?
How many copies do you burn?
Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies?
Do you feel this may de-value music?
How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? (i.e. not being able to burn a cd because of bulit in software that won't allow it)
If you want you can emai,me at paulette.mills@bmg.com, or just reply here.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks!

Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it?~I buy some, burn some
Or do you download and burn?~I do this
How many copies do you burn?~Well, I would say that I download songs rather than a whole album. But I have whole albums as well.
Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies?~Over all, no, because it is copywrited or whatever. But I find that if I like the stuff, I end up buying the album anyway.
Do you feel this may de-value music?~Not at all. I think it just makes the bands more aware of how much they need fans to survive, and to survive, you need to make good music.
How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? (i.e. not being able to burn a cd because of bulit in software that won't allow it)~I know they already have done this to computer games and stuff like that. I think it's fine. But if you look at things like VCR videos, people were all worried about them being copied or what have you. Sales never really ceased. I think it's all good. :)

Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it?

if i had the money to buy the cd i wouldnt need to burn it. sometimes i burn cds from my friends cds. if the industry didnt jack the prices up so much and still give the artist so little i wouldn't mind paying for a cd but as of right now i don't see any reason to give my money to a bunch of already rich bastards.

Or do you download and burn?

i mostly download and burn mix cds and live cds

How many copies do you burn? ONE

Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies?

it's my right to copy music that other people have paid for as long as they think it's cool. if the music was just on loan and you had to give it back after a certain amount of listens it would be different, but people purchase something to own and therefore can do what they want with it. IMO

Do you feel this may de-value music?

i feel that it can only help the music industry to an extent. there are a lot of bands that i would have never heard of had it not been for my ability to sample various acts across the board. so, it can only further the region that music covers.

How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? (i.e. not being able to burn a cd because of bulit in software that won't allow it)

well, i am all for it, i just won't buy them. what the record industry doesn't realize is that it will probably just cause a scourge of people taking the extra step to put the music online in a pseudo-revolt against the greedy. artists should get paid, not the industry getting 10 times the amount of the creator-ridiculous

-sometimes.
-mostly download and burn. songs, not full albums.
-one for me.
-yes, but only for myself. burning cds take too much time when you're downloading songs, checking to make sure the quality is alright, converting to .wav, etc. people don't ask me for copies of albums, they usually have a mixed list they want and unless they meet me halfway with the songs (by putting them up on a network or giving me the original disc), I won't do it. If a band is really good or I'm really interested I'll buy the cd as best buy. that's generally how everyone I know works. Then again, I go to a private college where students tend to have $$$ from mom and dad.
-no it doesn't de-value music.
-people will get around copy protection faster than you can figure out what RIAA stands for.

Of all my friends who own burners, none are cranking out cds every day. usually they are mixes for the car ride somewhere, or maybe a mixed cd for their cdman at the gym. other than that, we keep it nice and boring.. like burning powerpoint presentations for microbiology.

Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it?
- i usually make cd's of my favorite songs of a certain artist.

Or do you download and burn?
- i usually download and burn shows and rare items.

How many copies do you burn?
- i occasionally make cd's for my friends

Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies?
- i think if a person has paid for the cd, than can do with it what they want

Do you feel this may de-value music?
- i dont think i de-values it exactly...i think what it may take away from an artist in record sales money, it more than makes up for in promotion (people burning cd's for their friends is like spreading hype about a band)

How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? (i.e. not being able to burn a cd because of bulit in software that won't allow it)
- i think it sucks because from what i have read, they wont be able to be played in computers at all....and that is the only way i listen to music at home. what is the point of having speakers for your computer if you can use them?

- the only time i burn a full album is when somebody asks for it specifically {ex: a couple weeks ago, someone asked me to burn them a copy of the "O Brother.." soundtrack, and i obliged) or when i want to share a new artist with someone (ex: i have burned Ryan Adams' Gold and Death Cab For Cutie's The Photo Album for my father to introduce him to those artists).

- i also download and burn mixes of songs that i either would never be able to buy on CD (such as bootleg live performances) or that i wouldn't want to purchase necessarily (such as Britney's "I'm a Slave 4 U").

- i often times only burn one copy at a time.

- it's not necessarily my "right" to download and burn music.. it's just there, so i do it. it doesn't seem like something that will devalue music. i think that the inherent quality of music comes from the fact that it can be a shared experience among vast groups of people.

- copy-protected CDs are a bad idea. even though it may not be a "right" to be able to download and burn, it is wrong to take that chance away. there is NOTHING different between burning CDs and taping a sitcom or a movie.

that's my two cents

would you mind answering a few questions? no, i don't mind...
Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it? i usually don't buy and burn...
Or do you download and burn? i download and burn...
How many copies do you burn? usually just one copy...if i like the music, i will usually go buy the released album...
Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies? yes...
Do you feel this may de-value music? nope...
How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? that is fine...if they want to keep cd's from being copied, that is fine...someone will find another way to copy it...

Are you doing research for a paper or are you trying to accumukate material for Bertelsman's prosecution of music pirating?

I find it a little funny that your e-mail address is @bmg.com

Just wondering....

Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it? no
Or do you download and burn? a little bit
How many copies do you burn? 1
Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies? Well, I don't think it's your right to copy an entire cd, but burning a cd with a hodgepodge of a bunch of songs is basically like a sampler if you will, which are usually free and cost more for the band/etc. in the long road. It's good for if you want to listen to particular songs, but don't want to have to go through a bunch of cds. ESP. IN A CAR!! /images/wink.gif I don't like the idea of downloading entire track lists off the internet... but downloading a couple of songs to see if you like a band is a great way to sample a possible purchase. Who wants a CD with only one good song on it, right?
Do you feel this may de-value music? I'm sure I sorta answered this in the previous question. No. hehe
How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? (i.e. not being able to burn a cd because of bulit in software that won't allow it) Until they possibly improve the technology for it or something, NO!!! There have been a few CDs already released with this and they got lot's of quirks that make them wear-out (I'm not a CD-making expert, that's the lamen's version (sp? on lamen's).

hope I helped.

can you guys help me?
i can't speak for everyone, but i'll give it a go...
would you mind answering a few questions?
is this being recorded?
Do you buy a copy of the cd and then burn it?
not intentionally...i've never bought a cd and said to meself, "ooo, i gotta burn this one!"
Or do you download and burn?
i was absent the day they taught 'how to download and burn'..i'm learning this as i go, kinda like drying off with a wet towel, actually...i suck at it but when it works right, i'm astounded. i have yet to tap kazaa or morpheus or audiogalaxy expressly to seek out and download music. i just simply don't have the time to hobby-tize this...
How many copies do you burn?
when i have, it's been one for the car~maybe(big maybe)~one for mr. ardy or mr. or ms. friend...
Do you feel it's your right to download music and burn copies?
it's not a right, it's a privilege...kinda like driving
Do you feel this may de-value music?
the music industry has already de-valued itself...i'm no threat
How do you feel about possiblity of copy protected cds? (i.e. not being able to burn a cd because of bulit in software that won't allow it)

It's true I work for BMG, but I really am doing a research paper for my English 152 class. I just had to find a subject that I knew something about and a subject that I could get a lot of information on easily.
As far as prosecution, we're not doing any, as far as I can tell no one is being prosecuted because there is nothing to prosecute. As part of the fair act law, you can make copies of a cd that you've purchased.
I swear to God I'm not a spy. : )

What do you do for BMG anyway? I wouldn't think that you would need to be taking a 150 class. but what do I know.

Cool beans.

There is actually quite a bit of legislation pending at the moment, particularly in Europe. I noticed that as soon as Bertelsman bought Napster, they launched a couple of suits in the European courts to claiming that they owned peer to peer technologies and thus trying to get a stranglehold on that market.

I know that other people her on the site don't have any problems with helping you out, but for my part, you will have to proceed without my assistance. It's just too coincidental that you should be asking relevant questions to declared suits, AND work for one of the companies which is prosecuting.

Because my life is ass-backwards. I was majoring in graphic arts back in the day, then I started working for BMG, then I decided to get a B.A. in marketing, hence going back to school.
I work on the distribution end of things in Detroit. I set up advertsing with our record retail accounts.
Kinda boring.

so, basically, you don't mind the artist not getting money at all because you despise the 'industry-types' so much. Ok. That makes sense **she says sarcastically**.

well, it's a delicate situation. mostly i burn pearl jam stuff. so, that said-i burn stuff and don't pay for it-i admit-so what-
i download stuff to check out people i haven't heard of and if i like it and have the money i go buy the album-if i don't have the money i wait-
but if i don't like them there is no point in going and buying it just because i downloaded a few songs and listened to them
i should have made it clear-bands like metallica-if i liked them at all i would download every song that i could ever find of theirs and burn it 100 fold and hand them out on the corner-cause they are merely extensions of the industry so FUCK them.
i don't have a moral stance on the whole thing. i pay artists i respect and don't pay artists i don't respect. that might not be good enough of an answer, but it's my rationale. actually, i download a lot of stuff from mp3.com and live stuff. dammit there is no good reason...now i feel like shit-i was on a roll.
those artists that have directly spoken out against the whole mp3 thing are not on my list of priority music to get
but, that said-i try to buy as many cds that i can of bands that are pro-free live music (unlike metallica)
