I've always thought that the line "I got scratches all over my arms" was about someone physically abusing this person, but some time ago, I thought the scratches could also be from self-injury.
Of course, it says "it was you" somewhere in the song, but it can be a direct as well as an indirect blame.
What do you guys think? self-injury? no? don't care?

i think the "one for each day since i fell apart" signifies that it was self-injury...

that's what i've always thought anyway

You know, this song has always been one of my favorites, yet I don't listen to it that much. It always brings such a painful picture into my head. I've never sliced my arm or anything like that, but I've been in moods where I wouldn't have minded hurtin myself physically.

I've never doubted that it was self-inflicted, ...

"one for each day, since I fell apart"~~It serves as a reminder, something to just show you where you went wrong, whether you actually caused it or not, that's when you just lost it. Keeping a tally in the best fashion that you know how, so that you never forget, because you don't want to forget.

It's sad, that not only people have these feelings and urges, but that there are alot of people that do this stuff right now.

that song will always remind me of being in that cinder block cell... it's so weird how lyrics come out of nowhere (?) and stick themselves in your mind at the appropriate time.... and the scratches all over my wrists *were* self inflicted, 'cept there weren't nearly enough to be one for each day... since I'd fallen apart. I'd be dead if there were. /images/frown.gif

great song... GREAT... and I, like you, Jake... don't listen to it enough.

this song is way too personal to me...
hard as hell to listen to without
and emotional breakdown inside and out...
pearl jam put the words in my head that i had
been searching so long for...to say out loud...
"....if there was a reason, it was you..."

"Mom? I'm gonna listen to more Pearl Jam..the music on the radio is crap!" ~My Daughter~

i think that ability to move people is why we regard artists in such a shining light. they make us feel those things that we can't exactly focus in on and that is really special and helpful.

in relation to the original question. self-inflicted.
