so i have a female shih tzu, and a friend has a male shih tzu, they're both over a year old, and haven't been fixed yet... i wanted mine to have a litter of puppies before having her fixed, so she can have a daughter/friend to play with when i'm not home. she doesn't like other adult dogs. she's timid and defensive.

that was until i read about what all happens in a home doggie birth....HOLY SHIT!! i freaked out. i'm not doing that. count me out
maybe if i bought another puppy shih tzu, she would treat it like it was her own.

our dog had puppies when I was 16 - I loved that dog but she was the stupidest thing - honestly!

she had no idea what was going on - she was walking around plopping them out and dragging them around still half in half out - my mom had to follow her around and cut the cords and remove the sac and wipe them up

we even had to pin her down the first week to nurse the babies

but I hear most mommy dogs will do everything themselves

and they go off somewhere to do it so you have to keep an eye out

you can even call the emergency vet line and get a talk through if you need it

the sad part is that you may lose one - we didn't - but apparently it is common with first litters - you really just have to make sure they haven't swallowed any goo and that they're eating

I gotta tell you though having 8 little puppies running around the house was pretty special

being through 2 litters of kittens has been a bit or an experience too - the mom does pretty well everything but she tried to stash them away the first week in closets and corners

you can do it Joe!!!

this is what i read...

Your dog's water may break first, or the sac may be pushed out. As each puppy emerges, your Shih Tzu will most likely tear away the surrounding sac and lick the pup clean. When she licks her puppy, it stimulates blood flow and causes the pup to breath. If she does not do this, you must! Gently rub the pups body and use the bulb syringe to clean out the mouth and nose of fluids. She will also bite off the umbilical cord; if not, this is where the thread will come in. You must tie the beginnings of a knot carefully around the cord, about 2 inches from the body of the puppy. Then in a swift motion, pull each end of the thread which will cut the cord. The part that remains on the pup will dry out and fall off within a week or two. If she rejects the pups, a rare possibility, put a heating pad under some sheets to provide warmth without risk of burns and use a dropper to feed the pups. In the majority of cases, the puppies will only need to you carefully guide them to mom's milk.

Do not be shocked when she most likely eats the sac, placenta and other elements that are expelled. As regal as the Shih Tzu is, pure animal instinct is at play during this time and this is normal and accepted behavior. Many people wonder if a dog feels pain or to what degree. While one can only theorize as to the extent, it will be clear that the dog will be experiencing pain. Many dogs will cry; do keep in mind that many female humans choose to "go natural" and your dog will be find. If having her give birth to puppies is to happen at your home, do have your vet on standby in case she appears to be in extreme duress.

Of course, once all of the puppies have come out, she will need plenty of rest and TLC.

hey jason and share!

2 years ago my neighbor's lab had complications with her first litter...
we waited and waited when she went into labor but she wasn't progressing and they had to go to the emergency clinic at 1am.
she ended up losing 3 of the 6 puppies and had to have a hysterectomy :frown:
that was the one and only experience i've ever had with doggie birth and i was hoping to see the whole thing live and in person.

i must say though, those 3 precious pups were such little loves.... :koed:
i couldn't stay away <3 <3 <3
