This really does have to do with pearl jam, so please bear with me…..

Ok, so most of you guys know that I got tickets to see the dave matthews band this Sunday in charlottesville, va. I was really excited, it was a charity gig (all the $ will go to bamma rocks, dave’s charity) and, and, AND Neil friggen Young was opening for him…how cool is that???? With everything going on in my life lately, this was almost as exciting as seeing pearl jam with my frien 13 ;) (I said almost)

Ok…so last sat night…I see that mr. matthews cancelled the concert….why?…..because they didn’t sell enough tickets…..DIDN’T SELL ENOUGH TICKETS?????? Their manager says that they are sorry but it seems as though they wont make enough money on this show for it to be worthwhile to the charity…..HELLO….do the math with me, peeps, each ticket was $47.50…the show is in a college football stadium and the night before is sold out – totally. Not to mention that dave and his band have been on tour for almost 4 years straight and have released about 4 or so albums during the same time period…as well as a new almost sold out tour this year.

Do you think they guy could have kicked in a couple-a bucks and just put the freaking show on???? Do you think his management could have come up with an interesting way to fill the stadium up (I can think of about 5 different ways to get rid of tickets).

See, I am the marketing director of an orchestra in s. jersey. I am lucky to get 300 folks per concert, after killing myself with the publicity machine….The way we operate is, if there are 2 people in the audience, you suck it up, put on the show and use the gig as another rehearsal.

I have never heard of such crap….and being a faithful fan of pearl jam, a band that does nothing but completely and totally give back to each and every fan, I guess I have my standards set a little too high for the current crap that is flooding the entertainment market.

Since when is the size of the crowd more important than the music and your fans?

Ya know, after reading in rolling stone how Dave caved into his record company to “co-write” more up-beat songs and then caving into them again to do another tour that he really didnt want to do made me wonder about his integrety. Now, I don’t have to wonder. Unfortunately, dave has become part of the problem in music today.

I am an x dave fan /images/frown.gif

Thanks for lettin me rant!

I'm sorry, cath... i know you were really excited for this. You know, every time another performer fucks up like this, it makes Pearl Jam look that much better.

i'm sorry to hear about that..
you know, it's not dave personally making those decisions, it's the people(i.e., assholes) around him who decide. he problee would've played if 10 people showed up. sandi's right, this just makes pearl jam shine..thank god they call the shots and they have good people around them.

i'm sorry for you and the other fans...
but it's the charity that loses the most...
and that's what's really pathetic.

see, i know a lot of the problem lies in the folks that surround the "dave machine" however (and again), after knowing what i know about how SOME bands do it...being strong enough to say, fuck you, we are doing what is right, we are going to make the music that WE want to make and still be faithful to our fans....well, anything less just doesnt work anymore.

dave has enough power to firmly make a stand...but for some reason he doesnt. i feel sorry for him and i feel sorry for his fans.

unfortunately, if he doesnt change and get stronger, we will all be watching the dave matthews machine crash and burn in the very near future.

i call BS on that though... when it comes *right* down to it, he is the man in charge of the whole gig... he has the power to say "the show must go on!!"

Well......

I'm not a big Dave fan, and to me, this just helps my attitude. I think he's a money grabber. Yes, this was for a charity, (supposedly) But doesn't it make you wonder...if it was for a charity, 10 people could have shown up and that would be making money. So Dave....What the hell?

I think he is just trying too hard to get all those little girls from liking N'Sync. I'm sorry that I'm bashing him, cuz I know some of are fans, but the guy just gets on my nerves. And being okay with Napster isn't going to save him with me. /images/tongue.gif

Carry on.hehehehe

Yes, it is the Dave Machine...but remember, Dave can always get a new machine. And I don't see him trying.

And I think that this was something that even Neil should have opened his mouth on, because he's a big guy in Benefits too, so someone didn't want to do it.

the only explanation for it that makes sense is that they didn't sell enough tix to cover costs for the show, but they could have come up with *something*... where there is a will, there is a way... apparently there is no will.

Highway23

exactly.

When I think of a benefit concert, I think of something that is being put on for the fans, and for the beneficiary(sp?) This means that there is some planning behind it, knowing where yer playing, promotions, and stuff like that....Another thing with this, is the ticket prices themselves. Yes, it's great to have 50 bucks coming in from each person, but by laying up prices like this, yer calling for those kids to get that money, and that turns alot of people off. I can't remember how much the Bridge was, but there were a hell of a lot more bands there..so...

I just think that this wasn't really organized in the way that it should have been. Some fishy stuff, some dumb stuff, and disappointing stuff as well....it's too bad.

It must be a burden to know everything about everyone.
Glad to see dave bashing finally made it to this board. PJ is by far my favorite band, but I seem to remember them cancelling basically an entire tour. This is one concert, and none of you are in his head or know all the circumstances behind this. PJ is the greastest rock band on earth, you don't have to tear everyone else down to place them on a pedestal, and as an outsider, I would have much rather watched PJ live in concert than live via satellite at a congressional hearing. However I was enlightened enough to know it was for the fans and for the best, just like I'm enlightened enough to wait in passing judgement on a group with a history of giving back to their fans, and giving to charity.

Well Jay, I'm sorry that your a Dave Matthews Fan. There are alot, I'm just not one of them.I didn't claim to know everything about them, and I never will. just not my cup of tea. I was just stating my opinion on this. Just because I am saying I don't like one, doesn't mean that I am ripping everyone else down. Sorry that it had to be one of your favorites. (if it is) Yeah, PJ cancelled a tour, that wasn't too cool either. But I just don't like Dave, that's all.

I wasn't replying to you, man,
I thought your replies were very pc, I was talking to sand, who rips them like three times in this post. I just see it so much it gets to me, DMB isn't Pearl Jam, nobody is, and I just get sick of seeing every band that has the least bit of commercial success being branded a sellout because they don't follow PJ's formula. I like that PJ's our little secret.

I usually just lurk around in here,
you guys have a good vibe in here, and I'm a little abrasive and too oft misunderstood(see above, case in point:) so I lay low as to avoid harshing anyone's mellow. Don't really know why I felt inspired to chime in here, you guys are usually above band bashing.

I do have to admit Jay, it is often hard to understand you /images/smile.gif that's ok though. But I do have to admit, that I have seen worse "Bashing" posts.

jay i think you being partial to DMB sucks (no offense) but if he cancelled a concert after he had sold out the first night, that's seems shitty to me. Also, bringing up PJ's cancelling a tour has absolutely nothing to do with this. Dave is hurting two parties, his fans and the charity. PJ at least was upfront with their plans, not waiting till the last minute to tell people who had driven 12 hours to go home. I mean come on, your post seemed to not address the issue, you can like Dave Matthew$ but don't get all defensive. I don't think any of us know what happened(although i don't think i care about Dave, so why the hell am i wasting my time writing this?)

On another note, Dave's album that he scrapped for that horrible one he just released is VERY good. How he thought it was bad is beyond me....for those of you who haven't heard it, i believe it's just as good if not better than any album he has ever done. On that note i want to say good job dave for cancelling your show you dickhead.

DMB's one of my fav's, they throw down live, and I like hearing something beside the cookie cutter rock that's on the radio. His biggest crime, aaaahh, commercial success. I honestly don't give a fuck who likes them, the same way I don't give a fuck who likes PJ, the same way I don't give a fuck who likes me. I addressed exactly what I intended to address, which wasn't the original post, but some of the replies. If you misunderstood, oh well, I've said my peace, and I'm sure you'll say yours, I wouldn't expect any less. I'm not a huge violen fan either, and to be honest, my favorite album is the Live at Luther College with just Dave and Tim acoustic.
I do agree that the lillywhite album is much better than everyday, but he couldn't win either way, if he releases the other album, he would be accused and criticized for not evolving his sound.

He and Tim are amazing together.

that's the only album that I have, and it's very good.
