heard a song last weekend on the radio, he sounded like Layne in an eerie kind of way. I've gotta admit though, the song sounded good...definitely a Jerry composition which is what I gravitated towards.
still feel like they should have changed the name of the band though

Only thing that sounds like AiC's is Jerry and his music. that guy singing in the back sounds terrible. Layne was a one of a kind.
I wish this was just titled some other Jerry band... not titled AiC.....
Im missing the 90s.... the real 90s.
this is a sad rear view mirror to gaze into.

I heard this when they were first trying to get some coverage...
I hated everything about it...
Please don't call yourselves Alice In Chains...
Layne is no longer there...and he was THE voice...
Layne's voice to me was the absolute best...god I wish we could still hear it

didn't want to like it - didn't like the whole idea
but I really like check my brain - it's been playing up here for a while now and they were just here not long ago (didn't go because it sold out in seconds)
I wish they had changed their name - but who knows why people do things
it's not Layne and nobody every will be - but I still like what I've heard

dave grohl provided the perfect roadmap for anyone wanting to come away from an uber-famous band and become new...it was perfect...

I dunno if it's the same thing Dominic..
Dave went out & got himself a whole new band.. It wasn't him & Krist going out & continuing on Nirvana with a new voice..
AIC are replacing one guy, admittedly it's the lead singer.. And it's not like Jerry didn't try the solo thing & look at the success that bought him.. Why wouldn't he & the other guys want to relive the hey days of AIC?? Sean Kinney's been there from the beginning, Mike Inez since 1993, it's not like Jerry's gone out there & got a whole new band & kept the name..
Layne may have been the voice, but he wasn't the whole band..
It worked for AC/DC, very well.. Can't see why it can't work for these guys too..

it's not the same thing - because aic is doing it the wrong way in my opinion. you cannot go on with the same name and sing the same songs. songs that are so well known.
it worked here for ac/dc because bon scott died before he truly became the face of ac/dc for the US (i know it might be different for some people in aus).
when you lose a significant member of a band that is solidified and marketable, you have to do away with that and start up new...i didn't say it wouldn't work. it won't work for me. i saw them and it was weird and uneasy.

i'm really surprised by all this negative reaction.
at first i didn't like the idea of using the name, so i understand to an extent - layne was very unique and his eventual fate seems so tied to their music... but then i figured its totally understandable and justified...
imagine how much smaller their audience would be with a new name, how many obstacles they'd create, and how many old fans would not even notice them. they've payed their dues.
look at the shit jerry had to go through to get his last record even released.
jerry wrote most of their music, and actually sang lead vocals on some of their biggest hits... 'would?', 'brother'... whilst a lot of others were basically duets.
whilst its not comparable to pj without dave krusen, its not at all comparable to pj without ed either.
its not like ac/dc commercially, because ac/dc didn't take a 12 year hiatus, and they were also a way way more popular and marketable band.
i'm sure jerry, mike and sean took layne's passing harder than any of us would, so i think its harsh if they're judged negatively. its their music and their band!
i saw william duvall [new singer] with jerry's band in 2002 performing a lot of alice songs - he was great (tho my judgement of the gig might be a little clouded as i met my wife at it). he sounded, looked and acted nothing like layne, just played with soul and feeling and zero conceit. its not like they hired scott weiland or something. its all been very organic.
all the feedback i've heard on the new album has ranged from 'surprisingly excellent' to just 'excellent'. can't wait to see them next month (neither can my wife).
