View Full Version : The most important piece....

....of furniture in your house?

I am in the middle of buying beds and fridges and microwaves and stuff, so I am curious. For me, the most important piece of furniture is the couch. i have to have a good couch, and also a long one. I'm 6'2" and I need a big couch to lie on and fall asleep...also it has to be one that I can sink right down into....one that I can have someone lie next to me on as well for the rainy winter days when you just lie there watching videos all day.

Lots of people say thay their bed is the most important thing, but I don't spend alot of time there (coz I don't sleep) so its not so important. In alot of ways I am a bit like Mulder on the X-files.....I find it easier to sleep on the couch than the bed....dunno why.

What about you good people?

I concur. The couch is the most important, I fall asleep there, watch movies, cuddle, sit crossed leg on Saturday mornings to read the paper, receive foot massages, etc. Needs to be big, comfy and sturdy.

A big comfy recliner...you know that they make special "big man" recliners now...and you can sleep and do all the things that you can on a couch if the recliner is big enough...or you can get a couch that reclines

RogueTrader
04-19-2001, 12:09 AM
I am actually eating my lunch and looking at reclining couches at the moment in a catalog.....I gotta tell you...theyjust look silly....I like a couch to be a couch....it has to behave as a couch behaves.....not like a barcalounger......I think these reclining couches are an afront to the ethic of couchdom.

the only person here who probably know what this is is baby bowler, since she's local...but i have a big, overstuffed, custom made like, beanbag on steroids that fits two or three ppl (used to have 'em at saturday market bb)...it is filled with the same type of super dense foam as a couch seat cushion, but in small cubes...the exterior is made of hemp (they have lotsa fabrics, but the hemp was organic, durable, and enviro friendly, even though we have to pay bogus money to import hemp bc its from *shriek* a mary seed - whatevah) and then the seat area is blue fabric...you can sit in it, lie in it curled up...lay down (maybe not if your 6'2 /images/crazy.gif) and it sits two ppl totally comfy, you just squish it into whatever shape you want it to be...don't know how to explain it, but it is wonderful to fall asleep on, crash out on, veg, sit next to that person who causes your stomach to be quesy in that good way...its a good laundry pile holder when you're lazy...it kicks ass all the way around...alot more than you thought i could say about my chair, huh? im lonely, what can i say. /images/crazy.gif

I ised to have one of those when i lived in London...onky it was done in a kind of spotted cow cover......I bought it at the Camden Markets from this guy who spent all of his time smiking a joint. Desperately trying to remember his name...

Anyway...i gave to to a friend of mine when i left as i had.....well....ahem....relived her of the burden of her virginity in it and she wanted it as a keep sake....

No chance of ever finding one here in Tokyo, though....

when choosing your decor, the first thing you start with is the rug, then build your room around that..... did you know that? Interior design fundamentals.

I live by this theory.... have nothing in your home that you do not find to be useful or believe to be beautiful.... i have remembered this for about 8 years now, and it seems to help me remain true to my efforts towards minimalism.

Where one sleeps has to be the most important piece, I think. Your nest...your pillow...your body's sanctuary...preferably shared...

I love jamijam's idea of the beanbag couch for whatever activities may take place...so adaptable & malleable...hmmm...

I personally never understood the idea of show furniture in a home. I think I would want to fully use everything in my home -- LIVE in it for heaven's sake! Live with love & joy, every day.

Dang....off on a tangent there....

In Wallpaper magazine (the march 99 one I think) there was an interesting article disecting the method of room decoration....they mentioned the idea of buiding the room around the rug. There was another one that mentioned building a room around a function (ie watching the tube) or a feature (ie, a window or something). The way my new apartment is set up, there is this sun room thing and wall of windows which dominates the Southern wall of the livoing room.....it looks like a good place for plants and stuff and I think that i will try to maximise that...i like light, but I also have wooden floors, so maybe I will start with the rug....but i need somewhere to sit....

I try to be minimalist, but I am a hoarder.....

RogueTrader

It all has to be about comfort, I think. The purpose of the place is correct....it must make you feel happy when you walk through the door.

Happy homes develop from the feelings about them. Got a lot of love for life or someone special? It translates easily to your surroundings, infuses it with energy & great vibes.

I will shortly be moving house too. A huge challenge, but an exciting one. Argh! Books & magazines -- I'm up to my eyeballs in them! Trying to maintain minimalism, good point.

My own home would always want to be warm, old-fashioned, bright, woody (ahem), & naturally crisp & clean. A throwback to childhood, no doubt...simplicity. & I MUST have a fireplace.

How are you tonight, M?

chairs. i love chairs. you might say i collect them, but due to lack of space (living in a dorm) i don't have too many. but i do have four chairs in a room that i live in by myself and other people rarely enter. i only sit in one of them. the rest are just for decoration. i do intend to get more, though. while it's nice for the chair to be comfortable, the most important part to me is how it looks. few things make me as happy as finding an old chair that i can paint in fun new ways. of course, other types of furniture works for that purpose too. i paint anything i come across that's not valuable enough not to mess with.

Cool deal! I love chairs.. I had an artist friend who photographed chairs all over the place for like a year. She would take home chairs out of garbage heaps on the road, take photos. It was so cool. She created this great collection of photos of chairs & it evolved into quite a statement, thinking about all the bums that had graced the seat's presence, the things that might have been done in those armchairs, the good times or the fights at the kitchen table while sitting on that chair...the people that no longer exist that sat there. It was such a great project.

I'll just be over here.

true.....I am trying to create a place that people will be willing to come to to chill out. The most fun i have had before was the last place I lived in in London....people would just come by and drop and vege and talk and watch the box and hang out and then we would do stuff. i always had a guest or two....it was nice. This place may end up like this, coz it's right in the middle of a trendy young area with lots of cool bars and restaurants and clubs. It is in a nexus of travel for all of the people I know too....a central location....

Didn't you like that episode of X Files with Michael McKeon, and he and Mulder switched bodies, and he got a waterbed and a mirror on the ceiling in Mulder's apt (Michael as mulder...)? That was great.

I can't contribute to this thread cuz I don't really have furniture right now either, and i'm about to move and get rid of whatever I *do* have. The only furniture I own in my room anyway are two shelf things. Heh. Oh I do have this one chair... chairs seem to be a hot item... Yeah cuz this chair isn't comfy but it looks cool and I got it for $1. I don't think i'll be able to take it with me, tho, across the country when i move. In a month.
