Granted, there are perfect examples of cruelty to animals...but this? Give me a break (pun not intended)...

I know more vegetarians who aren't fans of PeTA than are - myself included. It's either irrational extremism or a naked celebrity anti-fur thing, which does nothing for the actual cause. And/Or both.

The tragedy/accident with Eight Belles is more due to how race horses are bred than anything. There is NO way the jockey "whipping" the horse had a thing to do with her breaking her ankles. Also, when she crossed the finish line, she was fine. If her ankles had been broken before she crossed the finish line, she would have gone down immediately. There is NO way she could have run with both of her front ankles broken, not even for a short distance.

PETA does far more harm than good as far as the cause of preventing animal cruelty is concerned. They are uneducated about many of the things they pick on and are overly extreme.

Case in point... I will never forget Pamela Anderson talking about Sigfreid and Roy's Siberian White Tigers and claiming they were genetically altered because "white tigers don't occur in nature." Ummm...yeah, they do Pam...they just don't usually survive in nature because they can't camouflage themselves very well so it is hard for them to hunt and to hide from predators.

i find this event extremely disturbing. it sickens and saddens me to see pictures of a vet euthanizing this horse. awful.

i do think that something needs to be done for the safety of these horses. a horse should not fatally break two ankles by just running on a track. they just arent designed that way. i know nothing about horseracing, however it seems to me that the drugs that are given to these animals need to be investigated further...and i am suprised at the risks that the horse owners take with these extremely valuable animals.

and, about the whipping thing, it seems to me that if a horse is a winner, then it shouldnt have to be whiped to win. yes, it is cruel. my em refuses to watch horse races because of it. there are other ways to get a horse to pull out a win.

and yes, i know that the whipping did not cause the horse to break its ankles. but i do not think that its a bad idea for peta to get involved and hopefully get some changes for the safety of these horses.
