Help an idiot out here

I have to make a call-back to someone with an extension number (for the OneMatch.ca thingie - a bone marrow and stem cell donation network) and I'm not sure how you dial numbers with extensions. Do you have to dial the number straight out including ext. or do you press a key and then add the ext. number? Or am I way off on both counts?

call the phone number. then you will either get an operator/receptionist that will ask for the extension number, or you will get an automated system that allows you to enter it.
