Awesome show tonight. A real connoisseur's set list featuring some songs that don't often get an airing, executed extremely well...well, except for Green Disease, which was a debacle.
Set 1 Long Road, Severed Hand, Grievance, Comatose, Given To Fly, Low Light, I Got Id, Faithfull, Green Disease, Marker In The Sand, Immortality, Down, Present Tense, State Of Love And Trust, Go, Save You, Porch
Encore 1 Inside Job, Parachutes, Crazy Mary, Do The Evolution, Alive
Encore 2 No More, Bu$hleaguer, World Wide Suicide, Rockin' In The Free World, Indifference
The solo on Crazy Mary was one of the best Mike has done in ages. Initially Boom started things off, but Mike kind of snuck over, stood beside him and traded chops with him. It went on for ages but never really got monotonous. Bu$hleaguer was an odd choice for an encore song and it kind of interrupted the momentum a bit. No More is a song I hadn't heard of before and it seems that it might be a new one as it's only ever been played before in Germany prior to this. It's not bad - a protest song about the war - but sounded like something from "Blonde on Blonde".
I also got the impression that there may have been a little tension bubbling away with Ed and Stone tonight (I know, I know...you're all totally shocked), but it seemed to turn a little snarky when the crowd was chanting for Stone to sing "Mankind". Ed said "Oh...they're talking to Stone."..."I think they're saying 'shut up and don't give me no lip'" which seemed to go down like a lead balloon with Stone.
At any rate, the guys looked energised. Mike was throwing himself around like a man half his age (more than usual) and Ed spent a great deal of time climbing all over the speaker stacks and doing flying scissor kicks off the drum riser. Mike also took the lead on 'Down' and made it sound like it had been written by Black Sabbath. Stone spent a great deal of time duck walking from place to place and the vibe between him and Jeff was awesome. They looked like they'd just started playing together.
The last time I saw the guys play was in Melbourne in 2003. To be honest, they seemed like they were just going through the motions at that stage. Tonight was the exact opposite with more commitment and verve displayed than I've seen in a long long time. It was a great evening and worth the swollen knees and ankles I now have.
