View Full Version : Spring in Japan

Just a quick one people as I am supposed to be working here and I have a tight deadline to meet.

April marks the beginning of Spring in Japan. All over the country and here in Tokyo especially, there are thousands and thousands of Sakura trees. These are the trees which produce the legendary Cherry Blossom. They are on bloom all over the ciity at the moment. I look out the window of my client's office (where I am working today) and I can see most of the eastern part iof the city over to the Imperial Palace. It's like a sea of pink with grey buildings in between.

The Japanese people get very genki at this time (genki is the japanese word for child like happiness) and really get into things. They bring chocolates into the office, they hand out gifts, they make runs to Starbucks every 20 minutes (here in the trading floor it's actually ON the trading floor) and just enjoy themselves.

The weirdest part of the whole thing happens after work. All the office worker go out onto the footpaths and to the parks to sit under the Saukura trees and drink beer and sake and get absolutely shit faced. Nothing new there. The strange thing is the fact that they have their own little areas sectioned off.

At the first sign of the Cherry Blossoms blooming, you see all of these secretaries and sometimes senior managers of the company running out to the best spots in the city to stake out a location for their co-workers to sit and drink in the evening. They tape off huge areeas on the ground with tape or some times with stakes and string and then they leave their company flag in the middle. They go away and when they come back in the afternoon, the flag is still there!!!!

No one has come along to remove it, no one has just gone and sat in the middle of the area and said 'too bad, so sad, buddy, I was here first". The area remains the property of the company for about 2 weeks. No one does anything!!

It is also very important for companies to get good positions. It is a source of great pride for the the person who secures a good spot for his organisation. It is also one of great shame if an important company does not get a prestigious location.

I am still coming to terms with this place.

Rogue.... I don't think I have ever really thanked you for sharing these stories with us... as a person who totally dug cultural psych classes, these stories really spark my interest. Thanks, friend!

i would sooooo love to experience it, i imagine it must be so frustrating to learn to play by the rules of another culture, but what an experience it must be!

I don't play by the rules. It sort of upsets the Japanese people sometimes, but they also love to watch you break the rules.

Here is another bit...

We have a casual dress policy in our office (I work for an American company) and it applies to everyone, but you don't have to follow it. I wear a suit when i go to client sites, but most of THEM also have caual dress policies too. Tosay I am wearing a shirt by Mambo, which has biscuits of the Southern Hemisphere painted all over it.

We have had to install change room facilities in the office because of some of the Japanese staff. It seems that they leave home in the morning dressed in suits and then change when they get to the office into casual clothes.

Why?

Well, they are worried that their neighbours will start to talk about them, saying that they do not have jobs and are just leaving in the morning to save face, if they leave in casual attire.

The feel that if they wear suits in the office that they will not fit in with us westerners (like there is alot of coimmuniucation anyway), so they change to casual clothes. They must do this on the way home as well....

Now that is fucked up!!

I would not get along in a society that cares so much about what others think about them... I guess I'm too much of a rebel, they'd kick me out of their country in no time!!!

I'm on and off fairly regularly these days.. and now I know where you're hidinf these days you'll see more of me.. I wish I could get my travelling shoes on.. but I've got the I just spent way too much money on useless crap shoes on at the moment..

Babe, I am never too busy for you.....just don't go over and read the life questions post....

The tatt sounds great. I remember you talking about it for a while. Where did you get it? I am still considering what to have as my next oine and where to have it. I need to find somehting that I can connect with. I'm not artistic enough to create the thing I want.

Glad you are well again too. Is it something that will recurr, or is it all over and done with now?

Ah.. it fells all too good to be back shooting the breeze with you.. Now the first lesson for today.. don't ever tell me not to do something, cause you know I'm gonna do it.. but I'm now back (it was taking far too long)..
I've been talking about it for too long and I finally went and got it and I'm now telling myself it didn't hurt as much as I thought it did at the time.. in actually fact it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.. I got it at the base of my spine and dam it was just a little painfull.. no tears & a big smile all the way tho.. I think it's best til you find something you like, going out and looking for it never works and it's just never quite the right thing..
I'm doing ok, hopefully it's all gone never to return again.. I had blood tests and the 1st one's came back positive so for a week I was just like fuck it fuck it my lifes just pretty much over and then i kinda got used to the idea and then i had more tests and tehy all came back negative and now I'm all YAY!! so it should be gone forever and ever..
Well mu thime is up I need to be gone.. mail me soon and I'll have some new smutty jess pics in a few weeks time.. love to you all.. be good and if you can't be good be good at it..
