What is monkey bread Shaley? Never heard of that before.

monkey bread is yummy. sometimes called pull-apart bread. you use slightly thawed dough. you dip it in melted butter (i put honey in the butter) and put it in a bundt cake pan. then you bake it. when it comes out it pops out in a ring and you pull individually buttered bread pieces off and eat it...we put it in the middle of the table and everyone pulls it off as they eat dinner.

you can also make it with garlic in the butter for spaghetti night....or cinnamon and sugar for a yummy breakfast treat.

here is what it looks like...

here is a recipe for the cinnamon roll kind...

Ingredients:
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
24 Rhodes Bake-N-Serv™ White Dinner Rolls
2/3 cup Brown sugar
2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup Pecans, chopped

Thaw rolls until soft (about 1 hour at room temperature). Cut each roll in half. In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts together. Dip roll halves in butter then roll in cinnamon/sugar mixture until thoroughly coated. Arrange in bundt pan that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise until double in size (2-3 hours). Remove wrap. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 50 minutes. Cover with foil the last 15 minutes of baking. Immediately after removing from the oven, carefully release edges and center tube with a knife. Invert onto a serving plate.

This can be changed up according to taste. I like to put honey in the melted butter and then put them in the pan. I have also done it with garlic and butter. (great for spaghetti dinners!)

Mmmm Shaley...monkey bread, I will have to try this one out soon.

My friend and I are making:
Turkey (A ginormous free-range, organic beast that I had to carry home on top of my head from the butcher because it was so heavy).
Stuffing
Gravy
Butternut squash and maple syrup puree
Cornbread (Almost didn't happen-this is a near corn-meal free country)
Cucumber, hummous, avocado & red pepper hors d'oeuvres
Chocolate Chip cookies
A hot apple cider-like drink that I am improvising using apple juice and spiced apple and cinnamon tea (Apple cider here is "hard cider")

Other people are bringing:
Cheese plate and crackers
Tofurky for the veggie peeps
Salad
Dinner rolls
Sweet potatoes
Mashed Potatoes
Green Beans
Peas
Cranberry jelly
Cranberry and orange chutney
Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie and ice cream
Chocolate something
Lots and lots of wine

I have to say that I am really excited about sharing this Thanksgiving with my non-American friends. I am so tempted to make them wear pilgrim and Indian hats and subject them to a finger-puppet show of the Thanksgiving story. Mwahahaha...cultural imperialism through food!

I feel like you're missing out on the joys of life.

I don't have any friends or family near by. I only have the one brother, and, although he lives about 90 miles away, we don't talk to one another.

It's ok, it beats having arguments and throwing food at each other or whatever.

At least I get to sleep in tomorrow and don't have to stress out about a large meal and company.

A*FallsInMay
11-22-2006, 09:49 PM
That is one way to look at it. I guess everyone gives thanks in a different way-sleeping in is definitely something to be thankful for.

panthergirl

:ogre: i do wish i could sleep in.
i am so cranky tonite.

anyway.. i have 28 or so for din-din but i am most excited that roberta and dominic may join us!

our menu:
2 fried turkeys
ham
green beans
2 varieties of sweet potatoes (one with marshmallows on top; one with maple syrupy goodness)
corn souffle
mashed potatoes
piccadillo (cuban style meat stuffing made by javy's aunt)
black beans and rice, of course
rolls; corn bread
cranberry sauce (i make it fresh)
gravy

of course, wine and spirits...

appetizers: veggie platter, some dips, etc
desserts: very special pecan pie, apple pie, pumpkin pie, whipped cream, ice cream, fruit platter, choc covered strawberries...

and i must say, i do enjoy thanksgiving when it finally arrives but it is so stressful to have it here even tho everyone beings tons of food and stuff.
the preparation is a BITCH and i am so damn busy at work this time of year.
sucks that out of everyone that'll be here... I am the ONLY one that will be working friday and saturday at the stores.
i will be at TOYS R US directing customers to mattel and fisher price items. :scared:

PLEASE keep me in your thoughts...:para: eek.

We're going out to eat for the first time ever.

If capitalism wasn't such a bastard and we all had the day off Friday we'd be chilling at home with a home cooked meal. But capitalism blows, so we're going out and making someone else do the cooking.

My traditionalist grandfather isn't happy, but my bones and bed are!

Good luck Serena. I feel your pain. All the times I worked retail, I made sure I quit by the time the holidays rolled around!

we did the restaurant thing once, years and years ago...
once.
;)

i've worked for mattel for 11 years now. they decided a few years ago to put the reps out in the field conducting customer service to help out the stores. ugh.
even tho it 'll only be for a few hours, it's mentally exhausting.
but when i get home i'll take a nap.
or maybe go to the beach for some de-stressing :)

i love thanksgiving. it seems to be the only holiday that hasnt been ruined by commercialism. i love all the cooking. must be the southern girl in me. i couldn't resist stopping by the store on the way home.

i have added squash and sugar snap peas to my cooking list.....

I used to be one of those servers waiting on you during Thanksgiving....remember to tip well Cara. It was insane how crazy the restaurant got on Thanksgiving and how, well, how downright nasty the customers could be.

i worked at a restaurant near the mall in asheville. during the christmas insanity, i had a table with this woman and her 2 little kids. they had ordered a ton of food--lots of appetizers, steak, ribs...all for lunch. their bill was like $65. when it was time to pay she handed me $2 as my tip....$2!!! and then the worst thing....she says "i'm sorry it couldn't be more, but you understand...it's christmas..." that was all i could take. i stopped waiting tables less than a month after that. keep in mind, this was NC...so i was only making like $3 an hour (unlike washington where servers make minimum wage- which in WA is like $7).

Buannan
11-23-2006, 02:32 PM
servers up here make $7.35/hr AND have benefits since they are part of a union

I've never waited tables up here...I only waited tables in utah and in denver...both places I made $2.09/hr plus tips...yep...that's $2.09/hr folks...and I was taxed on 13% of my sales as tip wages...whether I made that much or not...in other words, I could work 80 hrs in a pay period and get a paycheck for like $20

pretty sad stuff

Waitresses/Waitors don't get the respect they deserve money wise, but they work for the tips. I never waited on tables, but I did have to take a class on it to get my culinary degree. Some of the people were nice, and some of the people sucked. Its part of the business.

We went to a buffet and had a very nice time. It was just like eating at home almost. The only thing I could do without were the screaming kids and the self important asswipes talking on their cell phones while eating.

Sure beats staying up till midnight cleaning up and loading the dishwasher. :)

For the record, I loved waitressing and would do it again if I could make enough money to live on and raise my son on without having to work nights and/or weekends. Unfortunately, that isn't possible.

Glad you had a good meal/time cara.

We had 12 for dinner, had a really nice night. All of us cook so it's not all on one person.
Lots of turkey, sides, wine, beer, deserts...Italian chocolate! Yum!

My stomach still feels like a cinder-block is lodged in there! :beard:

Love those pics of Pilgrims and Indians! Glad you didn't share any blankets with small-pox for your guests!

well goodness gracious....

we(myself and the boy kid) get to Rhi's and find out that her boyfriend is sick...he's been throwing up all day long. he's laying on her bed when he's not puking, and he won't be joining us at the table. then after about a half-hour his Mom shows up, we get introduced and she's unpacking all the food that she brought. I'm standing in the kitchen chopping veggies and Rhi and his Mom are in the dining room and the conversation between those two went something like this:

Rhi: "he's really sick, he's been puking alot the last few hours"

his Momma: "oh, I wonder if it's his Crohns flaring up?"

Rhi: "his WHAT?!?!"

his Momma: "his Crohns disease, maybe that's what's making him sick"

Rhi: "he has Crohns disease?"

his Momma: "yeah it's..."

Rhi: "Oh I know basically what it is, he just never told me that he had it. he's NEVER even mentioned it"

his Momma: "that's strange cause he takes medication for it everyday"

that's how that little conversation went. so we finished making dinner and every few minutes Rhi or his Mom would run upstairs to check on him. so dinner was the four of us, his Momma, my two kids and Me. dinner was lovely and we each put away about three tons of food. after we finished we got everything put away or packed into take away containers. we were just getting ready to do up the dishes when he told his Mom that she needed to take him to the ER. so we all jumped in her car, the poor guy was sitting in the car with a puke bowl on his lap. my house was on the way so they stopped and i jumped out and off the three of them went to the ER.

yes, according to the ER doc it was a flare up. they gave him two IV bags of fluid and prescriped some anti-puking pills for him and after 6 hours sent him home.

it certainly wasn't a boring thankgiving this year :surprise:

so happy you were able to stop by !!

Weird that the audience was so rude for that movie.
Maybe it was a tryptophan induced reaction.. ;)
