View Full Version : this is why SUV's suck

I was just minding my own business, already stopped at a red light, when this 70ish dude in a Mountaineer wasn't paying attention and plowed right into me. My poor little Saturn didn't stand a chance... I love my little car, now I'm not sure if the insurance will fix it or total it (still waiting to hear). It's been paid off for about 5 years now, and still (in my opinion) has a couple of good years in it. My neck's not too great either, but my chiropractor is helping me with that. To make it worse, the Mountaineer barely had a scratch on it, just a crack in the front grill. Those things are a menace! Anyway, just needed to vent a little. Say a little prayer to the car repair gods, maybe they'll decide to fix it!

suv's do suck...i mean, some people have a true need for them (large families, business use) but they do so much damage to those of us with normal cars!!
glad you weren't hurt worse... but feel better and good luck with the insurance.

THAT totally sucks. I'm so sorry you got in a wreck. Sending good car vibes your way!
I've never understood the city divas driving SUV's.... it makes no sense to me at all. SUV's are everywhere in CO, but usually there are skiis or bikes attached with a big dog slobbering out the back window.

they're the same assholes that complain that gas prices are too high...
Take care of yourself...and make sure you keep documents of everything...going to the doctor and all that good stuff...but I'm sure you knew that...
hope everything works out...

SUV aren't THAT bad. Ive had one for about a year and I absolutely love mine. It will be a year next month. I'll pay the gas money for it any day.
Its all about the asshole not paying attention behind the wheel that caused the accident, not the vehicle. Come to Jersey and drive any road and you'll be afraid for your life, my middle finger gets quite the workout!
I'm very sorry to hear/see about your accident. I hope everything works out.

you are so lucky - he could have pushed you into the intersection
schmuck
watch your neck - it takes a few days to set in if you have whiplash so keep up with that therapy
I'm glad you guys are OK~~

Sorry about your neck. I hope you make a speedy recovery. And sorry about your car! My brother's girlfriend also has a purple Saturn, 8 years old, which I was just in the other day for a road trip. Hopefully they can fix your car right up.

Ditto. Hope you are feeling better soon. Cars are replaceable...you are not.
Are you experiencing other symptoms?
-Nightmares
-Flashbacks
-Terrified to get back into a car, thus keeping you from working
These are symptoms of Post-Truamatic Stress Disorder.
Stay up late one night this week and watch tv. Slip and fall lawyers buy ad time during the middle of the night for some reason. They will be happy to get as much money as they can. :devious:

The reason for the SUV complaint is the amount of damage it causes to other cars - and people - in accidents such as this, in comparison to what a full-size sedan might.
I have sympathy for the SUV driver considering I've had a couple of fender-benders myself (if SUV person was apologetic, if not he's a douche). I also know what it's like on the receiving end, and have neck & back problems to this very day. I would do more than go to a chiropractor. My sister-in-law went to her regular doctor and she doesn't have many symptoms anymore. I only went to the chiro and I still experience stiffness, muscle aches, & spasms in my neck and back.
Best of luck on your recovery ... your car's, too!

thanks everyone... like Rockrighter said, it's the amount of damage they cause to regular cars that irks me... I know that if it was another car instead of this tank they call a Mountaineer, the damage would be more evenly dispersed instead of so one sided on my little Saturn's rear...
the neck is feeling better every day... I had whiplash many years ago and it was my chiro that helped the most, so I'll keep seeing him for now... thanks for the advice:)
I know I have to keep telling myself that it could've been much worse and I am very lucky indeed... still waiting to hear from the insurance company about the damages...Michigan is a "no fault" state, so my insurance has to pay for my damages... poor, poor little Saturn:(
thanks again everyone... I'll keep ya posted:)

you have got to be kidding me! a NO FAULT STATE! are the rules for upping premiums much more lax there than in other states? you have to realize that i live in a SUPREMELY YOUR FAULT STATE! my insurance premiums go up whenever i take a shit! and, if a tree falls and no one is there to hear it...yeah, my fault too.

well, they totalled it :(
I just got back from picking up my license plate... very sad indeed...
not sure what they're gonna give me for it yet... I just don't want to look for a car right now... oh well, everything happens for a reason, right? just keep telling myself that... I even had my stickman sticker in the back window, it's been there for almost the entire 8 years I've had this car... I may have another... when I bought it years ago, I think I bought a few... just need to find them... as I'm writing this, "Long Road" just happens to be playing at work... kind of appropriate I think.
Good Bye little Saturn, you were a most excellent car and have been so very good to me:(

awwww crap.
it is sad saying goodbye to a really good car.
and it does suck having to go thru the car buying process...ugh.
try to take your time, if that's at all possible...and good luck!

i finally made the decision to buy a new(er) car. i couldnt bring myself to trade in my old car though. so, instead, i gave it to a good friend that didnt have a car. yeah, i could have had a bit of money towards the down payment (not a lot, maybe like $750- the old car has 210,000 miles on it- but it still runs), but instead i know it went to a good home and i will still get to see it and ride in it occasionally.

i just pictured you doing night drive-bys from time to time...maybe even getting out and hoping that it's unlocked so you can sit in it while everyone is sleeping...
show up on Sunday mornings, bright and early, and ask if your friend wants to go for a ride. :)
I'm weird

Fare thee well little Saturn!
I'll always remember the fun times, the sad times, the little beanie bat tucked under the visor on the passenger side.
You will be missed.
But now we can look forward to Carmelles sweet new ride.

I'm sorry to read about your accident and the impending doom for your Saturn.
:(
Like Share said, I'm glad you weren't pushed into an intersection or worse.
SUVs are a bit menacing if you can tell the person has no control over it, but nothing feels more ridiculous and oversized than walking in front of a HUMMER stuck in traffic in mid-town Manhattan. Everyone in the crowd is looking at one another and the monstrosity, and pretty much muttering to themselves...'why the fuck do you need one of those in NYC?'
it's pretty funny actually.

thanks again everyone... well, they offered me a settlement today that I think is pretty fair, so now the car shopping begins!
I think I'd like to get another Saturn, probably the ION 3. Not sure if I should go used or new. I've never had a new car before and the way prices are right now, it's not much of a difference. I can't get the GM family rate, but I can get the Friends rate, which is still pretty good. They have the 1/9 % financing for 3 years, too. The Saturn service department near me has always taken very good care of my SL2 and me, so that's a plus. And I found my other stickman window sticker, so that's huge!
Anyone have a car they just love and would highly recommend?

aww crap... I was gonna test drive some cars this weekend but, this morning as I was reaching for the alarm clock, I wrenched my neck again... felt like someone was dragging a knife down the muscle on the side of my neck... just when I was feeling really good! back to the chiro this morning to see if I can get some relief... driving is fun when you have to turn from the waist to look for traffic... though it's really good for the obliques!
everyone, be really safe when you are driving this holiday weekend... people are in such a hurry and not paying attention!

gosh, i'm sorry...i hope it gets better quickly...what were you going to test drive?
smellrose1

I was gonna drive an ION 3 (5-speed) which I guess is pretty rare... I just like all the standard options and I like the control of a manual... I'm also curious about the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yuris, but think they may be a little on the small side... I've always liked the Vibe and the Matrix, so those are possiblities...
saw the chiro and he said it will probably get a little worse before it gets better, but thinks it will pass pretty quickly... here's hoping!
