Yep. There were a couple of threads on Synergy that were all complainy - one person thought Matt was "off-key" during the SNL appearance, to which I replied ...
"He wasn't off-key.
The sound guy should have realized that Matt's mic was up too high in the mix or that he had to compensate for Matt's voice projecting over Ed's. Since Ed's mic - or Ed himself - wasn't projecting well enough, he overshadowed the lead vocals a few times there.
And we all know that kind of thing never happens, ever. http://forums.pearljam.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Funny how some folk will point the finger at Matt for singing too loudly, when for all anyone knows, Eddie might have been having issues with projection, or the sound guy hadn't tweaked everything right yet (we have Mike's barely-audible guitar on WWS which lends to that theory)."
And in a yay-for-Matt thread, I wrote this ...
"Matt's voice compliments Ed's far more than Stone's. Sometimes you want the contrast to be there for the harmonies, other times it's better for it to sound more similar. It depends on the songs. Plus, in the studio, they have the option of doing take after take after take, plus auto-tune technology if they chose to utilize it. They need consistency live, and while Stone is definitely capable of it and is a good singer in his own right, his voice is less compatible with Ed's.
That's it."
