Pearl Jam Taking It Easy in the Studio

By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Pearl Jam has begun work on its eighth studio album in its Seattle homebase.

"We're recording but not really putting any pressure for something to actually come out of it," frontman Eddie Vedder (news) told former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones on his Friday radio show, Jonesy's Jukebox, which emanates from Los Angeles radio station KDLD-FM (Indie 103.1).

Asked if he still enjoys the recording process after 15 years of making music with Pearl Jam, Vedder answered, "Depends (on) what day it is or how much sleep you've had. We've been getting together as a whole group, all five (members), for five days a week. Actually, seven days -- that was one of the problems. I think we're going to slow it down a little bit and we'll get something down in February."

Vedder acknowledged it had taken some time for band members to get back in the swing of things after several months apart from one another. "You get together as a band and you want to push yourselves harder or get some place you've never been before, and there's work to get there," he said. "The length of time you all have to be communicating; when you're not working, you don't have to communicate at all, and you get spoiled and quiet."

"Even close-knit bands like Fugazi, (which seems) like a four-headed monster, are (made up of) four completely different individuals," Vedder continued. "They seem like a gang, but it's a gang made up of individuals. It's not as easy as you would think."

The as-yet-untitled album will be the follow-up to 2002's "Riot Act," and will also be Pearl Jam's first since leaving longtime label Epic last year. The band's official Web site previously confirmed the set would be released "on the BMG label," which is now allied with Epic's Sony parent, but did not reveal specifics of the new arrangement.

Band members have also been at work on other endeavors. Guitarist Stone Gossard is making a new album with his Brad side project, while drummer Matt Cameron (news) has completed the first new album since 1993 with the band Hater, which features his ex-Soundgarden colleague Ben Shepherd on bass and guitarist John McBain, his longtime collaborator in Wellwater Conspiracy.

Bassist Jeff Ament (news) and guitarist Mike McCready (news) can be heard as part of an as-yet-unnamed project with King's X leader Doug Pinnick, but no release date has been announced for the completed album, tentatively titled "Montana."

If there is a tour this summer, I will hold off putting in for my vacation in April.

I want to do some road trips for the next tour!

im a bit...not worried...but dismayed with this article.

when i first read about a *tour* in the spring, i thought it was too early...too soon since the last one. see, i want this next album to be epic. like vs or yield when we first heard it, you know? i was also bummed because i was hoping for some more BRAD from stone, solo stuff from ed, and a tour of the rockfords from mike. letting them ferment in their solo stuff for a good long while until they were dyin' to get back together and create more pearljam.

it sounds as if they arent getting together. i know ed is.....a bit odd....and less of a *team player* maybe then the rest, at least that is my impression/story of him and i admit it is likely to be wrong...but i dont like to hear discord around this group that i admire so much.

i would rather them take a long break and have desire to get together then to be forced or create within upset.

my opinion.... what do youse all think?

i don't think it's too soon for them to get back together and start working. they are probably just chillin and bouncing ideas around and listening to music. hard to tell. i agree about ed because that's my perception of him. i think he likes to get his head around something himself and then present his take on it and then let evolution happen instead of the process occuring throughout the incubation period. there could also be some fresh stuff going on that they want to get down because of the recent events in the world. i want to see some stuff from Brad because Welcome to Discovery Park was a wonderful disk. it's not like they have typical jobs...they have time to work here and there and get some other stuff done.

I don't think there is any friction at all. Atleast that wasn't what I gathered from the article. I remember Ed saying in SVT that this band "isn't like a marriage, we can leave and come back when we feel like it, and do other things". I think thats how they've stayed together for this long.

I took it as they were just coming back from a break and just jumped right into things with both feet.

Maybe I read into it the wrong way?

i would like to see ed take a coupla few years off and be a dad. seriously.
and i'm understanding the other guys have some personal
life-changing events happening as well. i know the music/touring/creating IS a part of them, their lives, but i think they would benefit from chilling ever so slightly in the meantime....

good things come to those who wait.
i'm willing to wait for however long it takes for them to
have a life and theeeeeeeen fire up the bulldozers once again.

to me it sounds like they're just recording/writing here and there with nothing really planned...and it sounds like they've been doing that for a while. I dunno, it would be cool to see a summer tour again...

I think that they are pretty much on task.

They usually do this. They're used to it. They have to be pretty excited to be getting something out on a "new" label. I think that they know that they have potential to put something good out, as they have always done, but I think that they really want to do it this time. I'm not saying that they are going to put out an epic (no pun intended) album...but I think that they really want to come out with a bang.

That could be just me but that's what I think. I think that they are all team players. I think that if Ed wasn't, we would've had better albums every time (that's me honestly) but I think that Ed and the guys decided to do some other stuff.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Ed solo album in a few years. He'll become a family man yes, as will the other guys. but they live and breathe music. that's what they live for.

sorry...tangent..
