View Full Version : somebody knocks on my door
Someone has visited me twice in the past month (after the election). It could be two different people, I'm not sure. 3 weeks ago, someone came into my apartment building. (There are 4 apts per building), ran up the stairs, and knocked on my door. I quietly tiptoed to the peephole to see who it was and I saw that it was a guy. He had short dark hair and his head was turned away from the peephole. It looked like a deliberate move so I wouldn't see him. He knocked, waited about 10 seconds, and ran back down the stairs and left. This happened around 8 pm. Tonight, someone ran up the steps again and knocked. I froze. The person waited about 10 seconds and ran down the stairs and left. This happened at 10 pm. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out who would visit me this late at night without calling. I never have guests over and if my friends want to visit they know to call because I really dislike having people at my place. I'd rather be the one visiting. I am guessing it was a guy because this person had very heavy footing. I didn't have this problem last year and I haven't made any close friends this year who would feel compelled to visit me. I've called any potential visitors and asked if they came aknocking and they all say no. I haven't talked to my brother but he usually announces his arrival by calling or yelling my name when he's knocking on the door. I haven't talked to my other friend because she's usually in bed by 9:00 because she gets up at 5 in the morning. The last time this person visited I tried to look down to see if he had a bible or a clipboard. Nothing. No uniform either. And this person didn't knock on anyone else's door. I stopped getting mail/phone calls for the previous tenant more than 6 months ago. UPS doesn't visit this late, does it? I'm expecting a package tomorrow.

unless he's got the take-out that you ordered, keep that door shut & locked.

(I'm loathe to say it, but the first person I thought of was "John".)
I highly doubt UPS visits that late. If you have a tracking number, check it ou (http://www.ups.com/WebTracking/track?loc=en_US)t (http://www.ups.com/WebTracking/track?loc=en_US) and see where your package is - they may have a delivery estimate time that is probably during daylight hours.
Yeesh. If it keeps up, call the cops. Nicky-Nicky-Nine-Doors isn't cool after the age of 10. Part of me wants to suggest yelling something at them, like telling them to identify themselves or just shriek really loudly so that he turns around and you can get a look at his face, but it might put you in danger. I wouldn't advise opening the door, but I doubt you need anyone to tell you that. Something tells me it's being spaced out so it doesn't seem as "suspicious".

wait now. this person hasn't done anything other than knock on the door right? and lots of people knock on doors of people they don't know with good reason...
but be safe, don't open the door.
perhaps you can ask who it is next time while keeping the door shut or mostly shut with one of them lock chain things?
or maybe leave a pad and a pen (or a dry erase board) taped to the door with a message encouraging visitors to leave a note...

holy shit, it was seth :scared:
shweta, i dont have to remind you that there is a germantown rapist out on the loose (i dont think he has been caught yet). i really do worry about you when i hear another story about that guy....yeah, i freaking sound like your mother, sue me. but i do. worry, that is.
that is freaky and the next time it happens, please call the cops. if the guy is sticking around to see what happens, then at least he will see the police come to your house.
ups doesnt deliver this late unless its right before christmas. and they will knock and leave, leaving the package by your front step.
hey, dammit, i totally owe you a phone call or an email or something...(i swear it wasnt me, if it was me, i would have shouted your name a few times ;) ). we should meet and go shopping or something.

And run away after 10 seconds? Twice within a month? What good reason exists for that?
The MO of the two incidents leads me to believe that it's either the same person, or people who know each other with some weirdness up their sleeves.

i would just say "who is it " through the door, then if there is a problem you could call. i wasnt sure from your post if you think you got a good look or not, but maybe it is someone from school or something that you dont really know but they know you or something? i'd ask who it is, with the door shut

ummm you know, you never know if its a rapist or worse...if you dont have one already, get a very large dog (if your apartment will allow it)...if not that, have your boyfriend over (if you one) and see if it happens when hes around (note again if you have one)...i would suggest calling the cops if it happens again...

...keep that door shut. The 'standing looking away from the door' thing is a dead give away. If that guy has good intentions or thinks that you want to see him, why is he not letting you see his face? This person does not have good intentions.

i don't like people coming to the door that i don't know - unless it's a delivery
which you can usually bank on before 5pm
are you close with your neighbours? maybe you can ask them if they've
seen anyone they don't know around
be careful going in and out too - if somebody needed to talk to you from
school or something they would have left a note
i say you do that "Signs" thing with the knife under the door next time he comes - you'll either catch a peek at the guy or at least scare him off
be safe shweeta

maybe it's a guy with a crush that's trying to get up the nerve to make a move
i was thinking the same thing
other options: you said you live upstairs - do you do your laundry real late, or something like that? maybe the guy lives below you and he can hear every move you make?
are you able to see the entrance out any windows, can you get a look at him once he leaves the building?
you're definitely doing the right thing not answering the door.
even if it is some shy guy with honorable intentions, he'll have to leave a note
and like everyone else said here, also be careful coming and going to your place
i sorry shweta :( better to call the police and find out it's harmless than be trusting and dead
be careful
