have i mentioned i'm going to see Ryan Adams tomorrow night in Memphis, TN? ;)
and before the show, i'm making a trip over to Graceland

here's an unreleased song of Ryan's called "Memphis" or..'drunk and fucked up'

All the railroad lights shine on the city
Full moon shall pass in twilight
In the oldest oak tree by the neighboring factories
Forever rising steel beams in twilight.

In the overpass view with the traffic lights hanging
By threads like ornaments
So did you have your last drink?
Did you raise it up to me, just to spite me not being there with you?

Drunk and fucked up like the twilight
Drunk and fucked up like
Drunk, like the twilight out tonight

So when the bar closes down it does murder to the city
Dirty and peaceful and mean
And for the record I'd stand right here on the corner
Waiting for justice to bring you here to me.

Drunk and fucked up like the twilight
Drunk and fucked up like
Drunk, like the twilight out tonight.

I LOVE RYAN ADAMS! I've been into him since Whiskytown. You lucky, lucky bastard! Have GREAT time at the show. I was going to see him back in the Winter but then he broke his arm and well...you know the rest.

I Love RYAN!!

howdy all
i had a great time in memphis, i could easily stay 2 or 3 days there
graceland was great, i had only been there once, about 20 years ago:P
it's a lot smaller than i remembered  but it's an awesome place
i kept thinking to myself how much this place would cost cause i wanna buy it:P..then i can to my senses and realized that it's not a possibility

ryan adams was kickass
it's the first time i've seen him
he's a very funny guy, always cracking jokes
the music was great
here's the setlist i got from answeringbell.com, and it looks correct to me:

To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)
Anybody Wanna Take Me Home?
Love Is Hell
When The Stars Go Blue
Please Do Not Let Me Go
Luxury
Closer When She Goes
Oh My Sweet Carolina
Chin Up, Cheer Up
In My Time Of Need
Wanna See You Smile
???
Steve Miller And Weed
SYLVIA PLATH (aborted)
Wharf Rat

Encore
Come Pick Me Up
La Cienega Just Smiled
Don't Even Know Her Name
I See Monsters

"Luxury", "Closer When She Goes", and "Don't Even Know Her Name" have all been released, but they're 'rare'...."Wanna See You Smile", (?), and "Steve Miller and Weed" are new songs
He's got a new backup band called The Cardinals... his old drummer, a new guy on guitar, a woman on dobro/lap steel, and a girl on bass
the new girl on bass guitar couldn't stop laughing at ryan the whole night

I was so happy to hear "In My Time of Need".. it hasn't been played in about 2 years....i wasn't expecting it

He wanted to play some songs on the piano, and asked the crowd if it'd be ok... he started to play, then stopped cause people weren't listening, and said that all he wants to do is play us some music, and he's not trying to be weird or pretentious, and he's not a great piano player, but he still wanted to give it a try...
so he starts to play "Sylvia Plath" and halfway through he stops again cause people were still talking
he puts on his guitar and says "it's ok, i'm not offended"
i felt bad for him:P
he played a grateful dead song called "wharf rat" and that made me happy.. i'm not a dead head, but there are a few songs i know of theirs...
he played alone for a while, then band slowly came on stage and joined in, then played an "extended jam" in the song.... and if you don't know this song, it's already a 9-minute song

then he left, and i was worried he wouldn't come back cause of the piano thing, but he did and he played "come pick me up" (!!!) twice!
the first time his guitar got fucked up... broke a string(maybe more than one) and that cause it to get way out of tune, that happened right before the first chorus... and he improved the chorus like "come fix my string, cause i can't play, with only four strings, unless i'm drunk, and i'm not drunk yet, but i'm gonna get, really fucking drunk, and sing you a song, with only four strings..." then he took of the guitar and they halfway finished the song with the band playing, and ryan held the mic and walked around on stage singing..
then his guitar tech brought him another guitar, but it was an electric and he wanted an acoustic cause he wanted to play the song again the right way, and he was yelling at him, not on mic, but you could hear him.. pretty funny, saying something about "who do you think we are the fucking allman brothers band?!"... then the guitar guy brought him the acoutic and ryan gave him a nice hug

"I see Monsters" was a beautiful closer, it was solo ryan, with the band still onstage, just watching... he played it on electric, but played it the same way he did on the record with an acoustic..
he left everyone wanting more

he played for 2 hours, and a guy told me he played 3 hours the night before in columbia, mo.... an hour with the band, an hour solo, and another hour with the band again...
and the same thing happened when he try to play "sylvia plath" on the piano

that's awesome joe

i've missed the "good old" ryan adams... i guess i've either been disappointed by his last few releases or i just haven't gotten into them enough. "gold" and "heartbreaker" are still miles above his newer stuff, in my opinion, so it's cool that he played a lot of those songs :)

his new band is less of a 'rock' band than his older band became
the new bass girl was even playing a stand-up bass on a couple songs
he's been recording a new album in Mexico, and he's gonna release it on his own label paxamerican (http://www.paxamericanrecords.com)
and i expect him to release a bunch of his unreleased stuff that's been floating around as well

"it's love
drink 'til you drop
in front of the wrong hotel room door
it's love...
drink 'til you drop
'til you drop everything you're doing and what you're doing it for
drunk
it's love, it's love
drink 'til you drop
into the ocean you made for yourself..."

You're one of us - technically, Jake, you're Quebecois.
