Equals mucho fun. The coolest thing was that I had to help restrain a dog, Tanner, for more x-rays (usually the animals are sedated but he'd already gone through that; these x-rays were taken after the DVM decided he should do a comparison of both stifles.) They only have 2 lead aprons and thyroid guards, so the assistant who I was shadowing and the DVM were wearing them. Melissa (the VA) was restraining the caudal aspect, and I had Tanner's neck pinned down and kept him from righting himself while Dr. Maarhuis (http://www.ucfv.bc.ca/dev/Aluminations/AluminationsFall02/TimMarhuuis3small.jpg) was prepping the Radiograph machine. He told me as I was restraining Tanner (when we first got him up there) that he'd let me know when I could leave the room so they could take the x-rays. He forgot.

Any super-powers I figured may I have attained never emerged, sadly. Drat. :disapp:

Everything that the VA does, I will do. The whole point is to make sure the hospital/clinic runs smoooooooothly.

According to the book, but really, we just generate chaos. :D

I'll write you up a whole listee-poo when I get back.

oh that's scary - i don't really love animals but i can never see them going through any pain -

yeah a list - how do you feel about cleaning up after animals?

I've been doing that for several years, it doesn't phase me. It's just poop and pee and vomit and blood and mucus and such.

We:

Answer phones & book appts.
Admit/Discharge the animals
Do SubQ vaccs.*
Clean
Monitor the machines - EKG, Oxygen
Assist with X-Rays (see above)
Prepare injections/vaccs
Restrain, restrain, restrain (see above)
Euthanasia/Bereavement counselling for clients
Information junkies (we have to know stuff to answer client's questions)
etc. etc. etc.

I may be missing a few things here and there, it depends on who you work for and how they train you to their needs.

*Only if you're allowed to by the vet; we're not really supposed to but it's standard.
